Chinese Gold Panda Coins
T he Gold Chinese Panda coins saw an immediate impact on the global coin market after the People's Republic of China sanctioned their release for sale to the public in 1982. Just three years later the American Numismatic Association voted the 1983 100 yuan 1oz Gold Panda as coin of the year
The Chinese Gold Panda coins are famous for being the first bullion coin to change the design on the reverse annually. There is a single exception to this rule which saw the 2001 Panda design repeated on the 2002 issues. The public was very vocal in their dissatisfaction that the Chinese Mint has changed the design annually ever since
The Chinese Gold Panda coin was first struck in 1982 with all 16,000 issues selling out within months. The coins began trading for up to 300% premiums on the secondary market showing strong demand for these semi-numismatic coins
Early issues from the Chinese Gold Panda coin series features the Gold purity and coin weight in both Chinese and English, however since 1993 the weight and purity is only displayed in English. This period saw several changes to the Panda coins because just two years after the omitting of purity and weights in Chinese, the first frosted finish coin was introduced
The Chinese Gold Panda coin series has seen more change than its Britannia and Krugerrand counterparts. In 2001 the yuan denominations was changed by multiplying the existing face value by five. This made the 1oz Gold Panda's face value jump from 100 yuan to 500 yuan. Modern Gold Panda coins are denominated in grams rather than ounces as was observed earlier in the series
