T he Australian Gold nugget coins are a series of bullion coins minted by the Perth Mint. The first coins of the series was struck in 1986 and featured a depiction of the largest known Gold nugget to be found in Australia. The wording 'Welcome Stranger' was included on the coin after the 72kg nugget was named after the famous nugget. The Australian Gold Nugget coins initially featured tributes of large famous Gold nuggets with the designs changing each year
The Perth Mint used the nugget designs between 1986 and 1989 where they changed the Australian Gold Nugget coin to feature a kangaroo. They are still one of the world's favourite bullion coins due to the annual change of design and the reverse frosting that is observed on the coins. This bullion series varies from 1/20oz through to 1 kilo. Australian Gold nugget coins are typically a higher premium bullion coin compared to Gold Britannia or Krugerrands
Many of the famous Gold nuggets found in Australia was melted down to produce Gold ingots. The Welcome Stranger nugget finders was paid £9,381 for their find, the nugget was smelted into bars that were sent to the Bank of England.
