The Gold Austrian Krone, or Corona as it is better known, is an important coin in Austria’s history. Austria, like many other countries was on a Gold standard between 1982 through to 1918 in which the Gold Corona coins circulated as the nation’s currency. Most coins in the market are not in circulated condition, because they are official restrikes. These are coins produced at a later date but with an original date displayed on the coin. Whilst two different designs of Gold Corona coins were issued, only one type saw its design used for restrikes
Austrian Gold Corona coins were produced in mass with date ‘1915’. These coins are not rare but are often seen in a mint condition given that they never circulated and are modern restrikes. The 10, 20 and 100 Corona all features Franz Joseph I, emperor of Austria. Two varieties of Gold Corona coins exist, one with Franz wearing a laureate which was minted between 1892-1905 and a bared head effigy which has the restrike of 1915. Originals of this design was struck between years 1909-1916
The Gold 100 Corona coin is a popular bullion piece that has a low premium. It is a large coin, with a mass of 33.88g of .900 Gold, giving it just under an ounce of total Gold weight. Again, coins dated 1915 are official restrikes. A proof finished version is also seen in the market The reason for the restrike dates was that the US banned the public from owning Gold bullion between 1933 and 1974 but permitted them to own coins with 'collectable interest'. The old dates stamped on new coins allowed buyers to find a loophole in the law forbidding Americans from owning Gold bullion, hence 100 Corona Gold coins became very popular at the time
