The Honduras Gold peso coins were minted in Honduras at the Tegucigalpa mint. The coins are some of the rarest and most sought-after Republican Gold coins of the Americas especially in well-preserved condition. All denominations are considered numismatic treasures with the diez and veinte pesos unavailable to all but the elite of the Latin Americas coin collectors
All denominations in this range share the same design which showcases the head of Liberty on the obverse and a beautifully designed landscape of a volcano between two castles with a pyramid in the rear. Hidden in the detail is a rainbow which extends from on castle to another with a centralised Phrygian cap. This is the design of the Honduras coat of arms
As to mintage of the Gold Honduras pesos minted in 1888, all that is known is 788 pesos in face value were minted across the three denominations (un, cinco and veinte pesos) with another 330 pesos’ worth of diez pesos struck in 1889. A significant discovery occurred in the early 2000s when a group of 13 1883 diez Pesos coins surfaced. These coins, struck slightly later than their official dates, were likely produced as wedding tokens for a wealthy groom. This was a legal and common practice at the Tegucigalpa mint. However, reports confirm that no regular issue gold coins were struck in Honduras before 1888
According to a testimony from U.S. Consul Herring in the 1888 “Report of the Director of the Mint,” “There has never been any gold coined in the country.” Esteban Lazo’s “Historia de la Moneda en Honduras” also stated that the first gold coins, in denominations of veinte, cinco, and un Pesos (excluding the diez pesos), were minted in May 1888, marking a milestone in the country’s history
The Honduras Gold pesos were never used in circulation, evidence suggests they were diplomatic and domestic gifts. Despite this, many surviving coins are no longer in a mint starte. Unfortunately of the small pool of coins that are in private hands, many have been harshly cleaned or seen some light polishing. Whilst this may have made the coins look brighter and lustrous, it devalues the coins and makes the better conditioned pieces even more valuable because whilst the mintage of coins is very low, the amount of coins that are close to their original state are tiny

As recorded by the mint director, José Estéban Lazo, in a document dated October 16, 1888: “We have never before minted gold coins and they were never ever minted in this country until May of this year, that we started minting gold, which came in part from Olancho and in part from Minas de Oro [northeast of Comayagua]. We have struck coins of 20 pesos, 5 pesos and 1 peso, with fineness and weight in accordance with the fineness and weight of the French coinage. The first minting of gold in Honduras, that was executed under the tenure of the current administration of his excellency, Señor President General Don Luis Bográn, will make history in the story of the coinage of Honduras since we have never done it before.”
Honduras gold peso coins were minted sporadically from 1888 to 1922, with some later pieces produced between 1922 and 1925 as wedding gifts. Official mintage records indicate five coins dated 1889 and forty-three dated 1895, though other dates are known, albeit without verified mintage figures
The 5 Pesos mintage data suggests twenty coins were struck in 1895 and fifty-five in 1896, but estimates of 1,200 coins for 1913 likely overstate their production given their scarcity in the market.
For the 10 Pesos, thirteen coins dated 1883 were discovered in 2000, previously unknown to collectors and believed to be struck for the wealthy. Only twenty-five examples dated 1889 and ten from 1895 are documented
The 20 Pesos denomination’s mintage figures are lost, but it is believed that only a few examples exist, underscoring their extraordinary rarity.
