Iran Gold Pahlavi and Toman Coins
I ran's official currency is the Rial yet the historical toman now plays a role in Iranian commerce. Following the hyperinflation of the rial, Iran's central bank redenominated the currency by introducing a new toman at a rate of one toman to 10 rials. The toman was Iran's currency in the late 17th to early 18th century before the Qajar toman was replaced by the Gold Pahlavi, which were minted between 1926 to 1929
The Gold Pahlavi was first issued in 1926 with the other denominations not made available until later. The Gold quarter Pahlavi, for example, was not massed produced until 1953. The coins contain Iran's coat of arms featuring the lion holding a sword with the radiant sun behind. This symbol was present on the Iranian flag until 1979. The origins trace back to the 12th century and have links to astronomy due to the Leo zodiacal sign
