The year 1849 saw the effigy of Ceres on French postal stamps as well as the Gold Francs coins. Ceres, the Roman Goddess of Agriculture and fertility, has featured the obverse of French 10 Francs during two brief occasions. The first being 1850-1851. The Ceres design reappeared in 1878, 1899, 1895 and 1896. The 20 Franc denomination was only minted in 1850-1851 making it a very limited two-year type. The premiums on the Ceres coin is still relatively small and is ideal for bullion investors
Unlike many other types, the larger of the Ceres Franc denomination has the higher mintage figures. Cere’s 20 Francs had a total mintage of 17,283,983 coins known, whilst the smaller 10 Franc denomination had a much smaller mintage of 6,102,992. As with other Gold French Francs, this type is an alloy of .900 Gold which makes the coins 90% Gold. Despite the Ceres design being a two-year type, the coins are not regarded as rare due to the high mintage of 17,283,983 of the 20 Francs
The Gold Ceres Franc is a popular design but was produced intermittently. The Gold Ceres 10 francs is the rarer of the two denominations, with just 2,399,009 coins struck in 1895, 1896 and 1899
Ceres is a goddess originating from Roman mythology, but there are also links to France hence Cere’s inclusion on the Gold Franc coins
Gold coins struck with Ceres followed the period of Louis-Philippe who vacated the French throne in 1948 and fled to England. The Ceres design occupied French Gold coins until Napoleon III began his reign in 1853. This brief gulf between rulers is the reason for the Roman mythological figure appearing on French coinage for the brief two-year period
