1849-1851 Francs

Gold Ceres Francs

The Gold Ceres Franc is a popular design but was produced intermittently. The Gold Ceres 20 francs is a two-year type whilst the Gold Ceres 10 Francs was struck over two brief periods. Ceres is a goddess originating from Roman mythology, but there are also links to France hence Cere's inclusion on the Gold Franc coins

1849 saw the effigy of Ceres on French postal stamps as well as the Gold Francs coins. Ceres, the Roman Goddess of Agriculture and fertility has featured the obverse of French 10 Francs during two brief occasions. The first being 1850-1851. The Ceres design reappeared in 1878, 1899, 1895 and1896. The 20 Franc denomination was only minted in 1850-1851 making it a very limited two-year type

Unlike many other types, the larger of the denomination coins has the higher mintage figures. Cere's 20 Francs had a total mintage of 17,283,983 coins known, whilst the smaller 10 Franc denomination had a much smaller mintage of 6,102,992. As with other Gold French Francs, this type is an alloy of .900 Gold which makes them 90% Gold
