The nephew of Napoleon I, Napoleon III was a popular King whom later became president of France. He was a popular leader who ruled for 22 years. Like Gold Francs under Louis Philippe, Napoleon III Francs saw two different portraits. One with a bare head and the other wearing a laureate. Neither of the effigies carry any significant premium over the other

Most Napoleon III Gold Francs feature the iconic wreath wrapped around the Franc denomination. An attractive alternate was struck which features an imperial mantle wrapped on a crowned shield displaying an eagle. This design was used on Gold 20, 50 and 100 Francs dated 1861 through to 1870 which was the final year of Napoleon III's reign
