Italian Gold Coins

Italy Gold Lire Coins

The Lira was the currency of Italy between 1861 and 2002, along with being the currency of The Albanian Kingdom from 1941 to 1943. Charlemagne introduced the Lira into Europe, basing it on the pound of silver. No lira coins were produced during the Middle Ages; they were only used as a money of account. By the 1600s, numerous Italian states had begun to mint lire, but their weights varied widely One of these was the Kingdom of Sardinia, and when Italy was united under the Sardinian rule, the monetary unit was used in the entire country

The decimal system was established in 1862, and the Italian lira, which up to that point had been divided into 20 solidi, was redefined to be equal to 100 centesimi. The lira was no longer accepted as legal tender in Italy in 2002 when the Euro, the official currency of the European Union, replaced it

Italian Gold Lire coins offer enough scope and collectability factors to challenge the most enthusiastic European Gold coin collector. The coins are available in different denominations from 20 Lire through to 100 Lire which has a mass of 32.26 grams of .900 fine Gold, an excellent choice for the higher capitalised Gold investor

The Gold Italian Lire is a popular European Gold coin with some very attractive historic types available from time-to-time for investors. Auronum offers live selling prices for Gold Italian Lire coins which change with the live spot markets

Like most countries, Italy has a rich history and some of the sovereigns that feature on the Gold Lire coins have a lot of points of interest. For example, in 1849 Vittorio Emanuele II became the first king of an independent Italy since the 6th century. He later married his paternal aunt’s daughter and had eight children with her

Vittorio Emanuele II’s son, Umberto I of Italy, features on some of the Gold Lire high mintage coins was assassinated in 1900 whilst holding tenure of the Italian throne. He oversaw Italy’s concurring of present-day Somalia. Umberto famously sold off his father’s race horse collection as soon as he took the throne. This was under the guise of paying off excessive debts accumulated by his father

Many of the Gold Italian Lire displays the coat of arms of the House of Savoy, a white cross displayed on a red background. Red is considered a lucky colour in Italy. Other Lire designs have an olive branch displayed which symbolises Italy’s desire for peace
