Yemen Gold Riyal

S truck at the San`a Mint in Yemen, the Gold Yemen Riyal coins are a series of extremely rare numismatic coins which were minted in 1/4 Riyal, 1/2 Riyal, 1 Riyal and 2 Riyal denominations. All coins are struck in .900 fine Gold. These beautiful pieces were produced in the mid-1950s, mintage figures for all denominations are unknown although one can deduce that the Yemen Gold Riyal coins were never intended for circulation

The coins were minted using the dies that previously struck the Silver Riyal coins. Official records show the Gold Riyals were intended for Yemen's treasury and as donative gifts by the imam. This helps to explain why some coins are seen in mint state (likely sold directly from the treasury) whilst others are ex-mount (mounted by the individuals that were gifted the coins). Unfortunately most examples seen in the market have been drilled and filled after being previously mounted

The mintage periods are different for all denominations and do not seem to follow a clear trend. The 1/2 Riyal was struck over a five-year period beginning 1958, whilst the 1 Riyal was struck for six-years from 1954. The rarest of the Yemeni Gold coins being the 2 Riyal, produced only in 1939 making these pieces some of the rarest Gold coins in the Middle East
