The uncrowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth was designed by Mary Gillick and was selected from seventeen candidate effigies. It is not reported whether all seventeen were of uncrowned designs. The uncrowned portrait was first introduced to British coins in 1953. It would be a long four-year wait until the design was available on Gold Sovereigns
