Queen Elizabeth II Sovereigns

Y ear 1957 was the first year that Queen Elizabeth's portrait featured on the British Gold Sovereign coins. This coin was the first of Britain's longest reigning monarch which has meant Queen Elizabeth features on more Gold Sovereigns than any other British King or Queen
The uncrowned portrait of her majesty saw the reintroduction of Gold Sovereign issuance after a near 20 year period in which Sovereign coins were not produced. During her majesty's reign, four different beautifully designed portraits have featured on Gold Sovereign coins
1952 saw Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne with a youthful and optimistic portrait of the Queen following the end of World War 2. During her majesty's reign, Sovereign production had a six-year hiatus from 1968 to 1974 with Half Sovereigns not reappearing until 1982
The Gillick Sovereign
1957 - 1968
The Gillick Sovereign is a popular design and marks the first effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth on the British Gold Sovereign. The design is known as the 'Gillick' after the designer of the portrait, Mary Gillick


Post-Decimal Sovereign
1968 - 1984
The second design of Queen Elizabeth II's reign was the first portrait to feature a crown. The effigy was very popular and was used for Britain's first pre-decimal coinage as well as postage stamps
Royal Diadem Portrait Sovereign
1985 - 1997
The third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II featured her wearing a Royal Diadem. The portrait displays her majesty with a necklace and earrings causing critics to accuse the designer of making the Queen “flatteringly young”


Fourth Portrait Sovereign
1998 - 2015
Ian Rank-Broadley won a Royal Mint competition in 1997 to design the effigy of Queen Elizabeth from 1998. The portrait was designed to fill the full field of the coin in response to smaller 5 and 10 pence coins in circulation
Final Portrait Sovereign
2015 - 2022
The final portrait was designed by Jody Clark whom at age 33 is the youngest person to design a monarch’s portrait on a Sovereign coin. She is also the first Royal Mint employee to design an effigy of a Royal to be struck on a currency coin
