Gold Syria Pound

T he Gold Syrian pound is an allusive one-year type that was struck in Syria 1951. The coin's official date is 1950 for the Syria Gold pound and half pound coins. There was an additional commemorative coin minted in 1978 to celebrate the presidency of Hafez al-Assad. Each of these Syrian Gold coins are made from a .900 fine Gold alloy with the remaining 10% copper

The Gold Syrian pound coins are a beautiful design with Arabic writing. The Golden hawk of Quraish holds a scroll with "Republic of Syria" inscribed. The reverse of the coin contains a decorated rectangle with the same "Republic of Syria" in Arabic. The bird displayed on the coin is the Hawk of Quraish which is displayed on the coats of arms and flags of a range of states that belongs to the Arab League

Investors may think that the Syrian Pound, which remains the national currency of Syria, is linked somehow to the British pound but this is not the case. Syria first adopted the pound when it was part of the Ottoman empire which used the Ottoman pound as a currency. After Syria was invaded by France, it adopted the Egyptian pound as its currency

Syria eventually was given its own currency which was initially pegged to the French franc, Syria later saw its currency pegged to the British pound and then the US Dollar. The Gold Syrian pound coins were never used in circulation which means that most coins that are seen in the market are in a high grade and excellent condition
