The Indian Head Eagle coin was first released in 1907 and did not have the ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ motto. This was not introduced until 1908, making the motto-free pieces a rarity of only 161,331 coins struck. A total 14,385,139 coins were minted with the motto yet it is unknown how many Indian Head Eagles survived
Whilst Mint State examples are known, they are rare. The majority of coins struck between 1908 and 1916 was used extensively in bank-to-bank transactions and overseas trade, leaving the coins with signs of wear from circulation. The coins were struck with a variation in design as coins dated 1908-1911 features 46 stars on the edge, whereas coins dated 1912-1933 had an additional 2 stars
