Gold US Eagles were first placed into circulation in late 1795. The design was based on the capped bust half eagle with Miss Liberty in the famous ‘turban’ or cloth cap with stars to the left and right. The eagle on the reverse is the design of an ancient cameo depicting an eagle perched on a palm branch. The size of the coin alone indicated the value as there is no numerical denomination displayed
This three-year type has a reported mintage of less than 15,000 pieces making this type of Eagle a very rare find in today’s market. The Small Eagle $10 are only seen with 1795, 1796, and 1797 before the reverse design was changed to the Large Eagle (Heraldic Eagle) motif for the remainder of the series, through to 1804. The Small Eagle reverse coins were actually struck only from September 1795 until about June 1797. The 1796 and 1797 dated eagles, despite the published mintages, are seen far less frequently overall than the 1795 Eagles, of only 5 coins are known
