The first US gold coin to even be put in circulation and known by collectors was the Capped Bust Eagle. The design shows Miss Liberty facing Right with a heraldic Eagle reverse which sets this apart from the type I version. It is typical for some of this type to be struck with the previous years’ date displayed as the US Mint used to reuse dies until they were no longer in working order
The reverse of the type II features the US Heraldic Eagle motif which is similar to that found on silver and other gold coins of the 1800 era. The mintage for the herladic eagle Capped Bust Half Eagle is 316,867 with records showing several hundred survivors, most of which is the 1795 issue. This beautiful piece is .9167 fine with a total weight of 8.75g
KEY FEATURES:
- Original mintage of 316,867, it is unknown how many survived
- Minted in 22 Carat Gold (91.67% gold, 8.33% copper)
