The Heraldic Eagle reverse was first seen on the Gold Capped Bust Eagle coins dated 1797 after previously using the small Eagle type I design. In keeping with silver and other gold denominations of the 1800 period, the coin’s reverse features an eagle with a shield on its breast, whilst carrying a bundle of arrows
No eagles were struck after 1804, as it was felt that because of rising bullion prices the pieces would be melted or exported as soon as they were produced. Mintage for this type is reported as 119,248 but the survival rate is much lower. For example, coins dated 1801 are estimated to be between 30,000 and 40,000 yet only 600 to 800 survivors are known
