The 1817 Half Sovereign is a significant coin in British numismatic history, marking the introduction of the modern half sovereign during the reign of King George III. Unlike later issues, this coin features a shield reverse, displaying the crowned Royal Arms of the United Kingdom, symbolizing Britain’s strength and unity.
The obverse presents a laureate bust of George III, designed by the Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. Struck as part of the Great Recoinage of 1816, the 1817 Half Sovereign helped restore confidence in Britain’s currency system, making it a highly sought-after piece for collectors and historians alike.
Coin has a small amount of wear on highpoints but is otherwise a very nice example with most of its original details cleary observed. No rim repairs or evidence of ex-mount. The coin pictured is representative of the coin that the buyer will receive.
