1923 is a significant year for the Gold Chervonetz coins as it was the first year of issuance as well as being considered the originals of this type. The 1923 coins began production in 1923 but were also minted in 1924 with these coins still being dated as ‘1923’. This practice was common in the US during the manufacturing of early-dated Gold Eagles which were struck with old dates on provided the dies were still functioning.
Following 1923 the Chervonetz was not struck again for 52-years, making the 1923 issue a highly contested key date. Official records show that 2,751,000 coins were struck with the 1923 date. 1,113,200 of these minted in 1923 whilst 1,638,000 were minted in 1924. The Russian government were known to melt Chervonetz Gold coins and so it is unknown exactly how many original 1923 dates survived. The coins are 8.6g of .900 fine Gold
