The 1989 4-coin proof sovereign set complete with quintuple, double, full and half sovereigns in their original Royal Mint collector’s case. The 4-coin proof 1989 sovereign set is a rare special-year shield design and is arguably the most popular of the single-year designs. It was struck to mark the 500th anniversary of the first Gold Sovereign which was struck in 1489, the design on the 1989 sovereigns is the same that was used on the original 1489 coin. The quintuple and double sovereigns make this a very impressive piece which contains just over 2 ounces of fine Gold
This 1989 proof sovereign set saw its mintage limited to 5,000 sets which is much larger than we see for more recent special year designs. The four coins in the set has a total coin weight of 67.88g of which 62.2404g is fine Gold
