Friedrich II of Anhalt-Dessau Gold 20 Marks (1904) is another example of a rare one-year type of a small mintage. Friedrich II of Anhalt (1856–1918) was the last reigning Duke of Anhalt, ruling from 1904 until the abolition of the monarchy in 1918. The German Marks featuring Friedrich II was only struck in the first year of his rule. During his rule, Anhalt continued to develop industrially and culturally, although it remained a relatively small state within the empire.
The outbreak of World War I in 1914 had a profound impact on Friedrich II’s reign. The war’s eventual outcome, combined with the widespread discontent and revolutionary movements that swept through Germany in 1918, led to the collapse of the German monarchies.
In 1918 Friedrich II was forced to abdicate his throne, marking the end of the Anhalt duchy as a sovereign state. Anhalt subsequently became part of the Free State of Anhalt within Weimar
Only 25,000 of this type of German 20 Marks is known in addition to 200 proof finished pieces which command a very high premium when seen.
