Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, was a prominent German nobleman known for his significant contributions to the arts, particularly theater, and his role in the cultural life of his duchy. His reign and influence extended beyond his immediate political responsibilities, making him one of the most culturally influential monarchs of the 19th century. Georg II became the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen in 1866. Georg II died just before the first world war in 1914
The Georg II Saxe-Meiningen Gold 20 Marks has a paltry mintage of just 2,000 examples and is regarded as a rare and high-premium type. Coins were struck in both 1900 and 1905 with 1,000 coins in each year. Proof versions are also known but the mintage of these coins is undocumented
