The Gold 20 Mark German struck in the Dresden mint and featuring Johann of Saxony is an elusive one-year type dated 1873. Despite this, this type was struck with a high mintage of 1 ,203,000 pieces. Johann relayed the throne to his son Albert of Saxony. Johann was not expected to become king because he had an older brothers but after they died it placed him in the line of succession
Johann had nine children, two of which eventually held the throne, this being Albert of Saxony and Georg of Saxony. Johann inherited the throne from one of his older brothers King Friedrich August II. Johann died in 1873 which left the throne to Albert who appeared on the 1874 German 20 Mark coin
