King Ludwig II is the most fascinating German Monarch and is known for the extravagant castles that were built under his rule. Ludwig II was an intorverted and shy King who grew increasingly reclusive. His love of building major fairy-tale castles began to cause stress on the Royal resources which led to politicians plotting to remove him. A panel of doctors who had never previously examined the King ruled him insane. He was subsequently detained and removed from power, relaying the throne to his brother Otto. Ludwig II was found dead under mysterious circumstances by lake Starnberg with one of the doctors who declared him insane
Ludwig II Gold 20 Marks are a two-year type, struck in 1872 and 1873. The mintage 4,326,062 is high for a two-year type and so the coins are uncommon but not regarded as high-premium rarities like some of the other less seen Gold German 20 marks
