The Karl I Württemberg German Gold 20 Marks is a very short-lived series from 1872 through to 1876. Karl I’s coins reflect the semi-autonomous status of Württemberg within the German Empire. This type features Karl I’s portrait with the text “KARL KOENIG VON WÜRTTEMBERG” (Karl King of Württemberg). The short issuance of this type led to a relatively small mintage of 2,700,000 coins.
Karl I was the third king of Württemberg, reigning from 1864 to 1891. He succeeded his father, King Wilhelm I. Karl I married Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia in 1846. Olga was the daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, making Karl I a member of the broader European royal network. Despite their long marriage, Karl and Olga had no children, which led to a lack of a direct heir. His nephew, Wilhelm II, eventually succeeded him.
