Alexander II Gold 5 Rubles (1855-1858) is a highly contested four-year type which is rare in the British coin market. Alexander II was a Russian, also known as Alexander the Liberator, was the Emperor of Russia from 1855 until his assassination in 1881. Several different Gold ruble coins were struck under Alexander II’s reign, with his son featuring on the 1886-1894 Gold Rubles. In 1881 Alexander II was assassinated in St. Petersburg by members of the revolutionary group Narodnaya Volya. The group had attempted to kill him multiple times before finally succeeding with a bomb attack
Official records show 15.7 million 5 Ruble coins were struck between (1855-1858) but it is not known how many survivors exist. 1914 saw Russia come off the Gold standard which led to many Gold Ruble coins being withdrawn from circulation. A large volume Gold Rubles went into her national Gold reserves. After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, the new Soviet government confiscated gold reserves including the gold rouble coins from the public. The Soviet state centralized control over gold, using it to support international trade as well as paying off foreign debts
