The Alexander III 5 Gold Ruble (Рублей) coin is a less-common coin in the British market and features Alexander III (1886-1894) who became the Russian Emperor after the assassination of his father Alexander II. As a response to his father’s death, Alexander III’s increased political repression by expanding the powers of the secret police and cracking down on revolutionary movements and national minorities. Censorship was intensified, and political dissent was ruthlessly suppressed. His death in 1894 at age 49 left his son Nicholas II to face growing revolutionary tensions that eventually led to the Romanov dynasty collapse
This type was struck in high volumes with a reported 20,534,089 coins minted by Russia’s St Petersburg Mint. 1886 and 1892 are the two significant dates with lower mintages of 351,042 and 128,006 respectively. The Alexander III Gold 5 Ruble is an uncommon coin that commands a premium in the market despite the original high mintage figures
