Following the brief issue of the ultra rare 1796 quarter eagles without stars, the design saw the addition of stars to the left and right of Liberty’s head. The number of stars and their placement vary from issue to issue, but these have not been collected as separate types, perhaps due to the general rarity of quarter eagles in this span
The quarter eagle denomination was introduced in 1796 with coins being minted in two major design types which was with and without stars on the obverse. The figure on the coin is Miss Liberty who is wearing a cloth cap or ‘turban’
