1938 saw the resumption of Gold Eagle production after 34 years of a break in Gold Eagle production. The US Mint consistently released more $10 Liberty Head Eagle coins each year between 1838-1907, the coins weigh 16.72g and are 90% Gold.
Some Gold Liberty head Eagles struck in a proof finish are known but the mintages are small. Prior to the mid-1880s, proof mintages were generally less than 40 coins and with a portion of those going back into the melting pot as unsold
Some proof survivors were spent into circulation. At the time the coin had significant value and the numismatic premium for proof gold was negligible causing many owners of the proof Eagles to spend the coins rather than try to achieve an above face value sale
