The $5 Liberty Head Eagle coin (1839-1908) saw its debut in 1839. Interestingly, $5 Eagles dated 1839 and some of the 1840 measure 22.5 mm and are often referred to as “broad mill” types, whereas later dated coins measure 21.6 mm. This half Eagle $5 is a small Gold coin with a total mass of 8.36g. The coin is 90% pure and contains 7.53g of fine Gold, the remainder of the coin’s alloy is copper
The coin’s design features Liberty ‘coronet head’ and an eagle holding olive branches. Face value of $5. The coins were struck in large numbers with an estimated 60,617,703 issues released into circulation. Given the Liberty Head half Eagles functioned as currency, surviving mint state examples are incredibly rare
