The Gold Russian Chervonetz is a widely misunderstood coin in the West as it is incorrectly considered a Gold 10 Ruble coin. The Chervonetz was a Russian currency that traded independently from the Ruble and was originally based on the Gold Ducat of Europe. The Chervonetz had an equivalent value of 2 Rubles when issued under Peter the Great’s reign. This modern-day Chervonetz was equivelent to 10 Rubles and holds the same Gold content as a Gold 10 Ruble coin, hence the strong association between the two coins
Unless dated 1923, the Gold Chervonetz coin will be an official restrike because after the 1923 dated coins were struck, 50 years passed before Russia struck any more Gold Chervonetz coins. Despite the coins being official restrikes they are very popular and trade at moderate premiums in the British market. This type is often seen in excellent condition near its original mint state with very little sign of wear
