A referendum in 1960 led to South Africa decoupling from the British Empire. South Africa had used the Pound Sterling as her currency but the path of independence necessitated a new South African currency. The Gold Rand coins were struck a year later in 1961 and marked the beginning of the Rand. The 2 Rand coin was made of 22-karat gold (91.67% purity) and was intended both for circulation and as a means of storing wealth
The gold Rand coins were designed to symbolize South Africa’s new national identity. The obverse of the coins typically featured a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, reflecting the country’s colonial history, while the reverse displayed the South African coat of arms, reinforcing the theme of national sovereignty. As the Krugerrand grew in popularity, the minting of gold Rand coins decreased. By 1983, the production of 1 Rand and 2 Rand gold coins was largely discontinued, as the Krugerrand had become the preferred gold coin both within South Africa and internationally. Large volumes of 2 Rands have been smelted and availability of specimens has became scarce
