The South African 1 Rand coin was struck concurrency with the larger Gold 2 Rand coin during the period 1961 through to 1983. The 1 Rand coins were struck with the same specifications as the British Half Sovereign and the South African 1/2 Pond coins. The Gold 1 Rand coins were released into circulation and functioned as currency in South Africa following the country’s independence and abandonment of the Pound Sterling
Along with becoming a republic, South Africa introduced its new currency, the Rand, named after the Witwatersrand (“White Waters Ridge”) where the majority of the country’s gold deposits were found. The Rand replaced the South African Pound at a rate of 2 Rand to 1 Pound. Proof editions were struck during most years of production but official records indicate that a large volume of Gold Rand coins were melted which has significantly reduced their availability in today’s market
