The Peruvian half Libra Gold coin is a Latin American gem. Its specifications match that of the British half Sovereign but the coin is a much rarer type. Struck between 1902 and 1969 at the Lima Mint in Peru, together with the Una Libra the half Libra was central to Peru’s shift onto a Gold standard. The coins were circulated but given the value of them at the time they were mostly used to settle international trade payments rather than domestic commerce
The half Libra has a reported mintage of 155,817 but it is impossible to know the survival rate of this type as some would have been melted down.
