The Peru Gold Una Libra Coin is a significant piece of numismatic history from Peru, reflecting the country’s economic and political changes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. First struck in 1898 to support Peru’s transition onto the Gold standard which was becoming common at the time. “Una Libra” translates to “One Pound” as its value was equal to that of a British Sovereign. The Una Libra was minted at the Casa Nacional de Moneda in Lima, in the capital of Peru. Its production continued intermittently until the final coins were struck in 1969
The Una Libra has the same specifications as a Gold Sovereign and has a reported mintage of 4,471,535. Several key dates exist such as the 1898 Libra which is extremely rare. The Una Libra coins were circulated and used in trade, however the high Gold content meant that the coins were used to preserve wealth rather than exchange for goods. The Una Libra is an uncommon coin in the British Market
