The Maria Theresa thaler is a silver bullion coin that has a rich history and is renowned for its consistent design and high silver content. The Maria Theresa thaler was first minted in 1741 during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The coin’s design has remained unchanged since 1780, the year of Maria Theresa’s death. Coins minted after this date bear the “1780” date, making them readily identifiable.
The obverse side features a portrait of Empress Maria Theresa with a veil. The inscription reads “M. THERESIA D. G. R. IMP. HU. BO. REG.”, which stands for “Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Roman Empress, of Hungary and Bohemia Queen”.
The reverse side displays the Habsburg double-headed eagle with the Order of the Golden Fleece around the shield. The inscription reads “ARCHID. AVST. DUX BURG. CO. TYR. 1780 X”, denoting “Archduchess of Austria, Duchess of Burgundy, Countess of Tyrol, 1780”.
