The Silver Kookaburra series saw its first coins minted in 1990 but the 2oz Silver Kookaburra would not be seen until 1992 with a mintage of 84,782 which is the highest annual mintage to date for the 2oz version. The purity of the Silver Kookaburra coins has improved over the years, the first editions were minted using .999 fine Silver but this was refined in 2018 to a higher .9999 fine concentration of Silver
The Silver Kookaburra series was initially only available as a 1oz coin but 2oz, 10oz and 1kg weights was added from 1992. Much like the Australian Kangaroo coin, the Silver Kookaburra changes their design annually which shows the beautiful native Australian bird in different poses and settings. The Perth Mint issues the Silver kookaburra coins in capsules as standard and therefore does not sell these coins in tubes as is seen by most other international Mints and refineries
