Silver’s Global Hotspots: The Top 10 Countries Producing the Most Silver
Silver, a precious metal with a wide range of applications, plays a crucial role in industries such as electronics, medicine, photography, and jewellery. It is also highly valued as an investment asset and a store of wealth. With increasing demand for silver in emerging technologies, including solar panels and electric vehicles, global silver production remains vital. In 2023, global silver mine production reached approximately 25,790 metric tons. Here is a look at the top 10 silver-producing countries in 2024, based on the latest data.
1. Mexico
Mexico remains the world’s top silver producer, maintaining its dominance for several years. In 2023, the country produced approximately 6,400 metric tons, accounting for nearly 25% of global silver production. The country is home to some of the largest silver mines, including Fresnillo and Saucito, both operated by Fresnillo plc, the world’s leading silver miner. Other major mining companies such as Grupo Mexico and Pan American Silver also contribute significantly to Mexico’s silver output.
2. China
China is the second-largest silver-producing country, with a total output of 3,400 metric tons in 2023. Unlike Mexico, where silver is primarily mined as the main product, China’s silver production is largely a by-product of its lead, zinc, and copper mining operations. The country’s largest silver producer, Silvercorp Metals, owns and operates multiple mines in China. China also plays a major role in silver refining and consumption, given its vast industrial and technological sectors.

Peru has long been a powerhouse in silver mining, ranking third with a production of 3,100 metric tons in 2023. The country holds some of the world’s largest silver reserves, estimated at around 98,000 metric tons. Major mining operations in Peru include the Antamina mine, which is primarily a copper mine but generates substantial silver as a by-product. Other notable silver mines include Uchucchacua and Cerro de Pasco, operated by major mining companies such as Buenaventura and Glencore.
4. Chile
Chile produced 1,400 metric tons of silver in 2023, ranking fourth in global production. While the country is best known for its copper industry, silver is often extracted as a secondary product. Some of the largest silver mines in Chile, including La Coipa and Cerro Bayo, continue to boost the country’s silver output. The government has been actively investing in the mining sector to increase production efficiency and lower costs.
Poland produced 1,300 metric tons of silver in 2023, making it one of Europe’s largest silver producers. The country’s silver production is closely tied to its copper mining industry, with KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. being the dominant player. Poland is home to one of the world’s most significant silver mines, the Lubin-Rudna complex, which continues to be a major contributor to global silver output.
6. Australia
Australia generated 1,200 metric tons of silver in 2023, ranking sixth among the world’s top producers. The country has a strong history of silver mining, with some of its largest operations dating back decades. One of the most significant silver mines in Australia is the Cannington mine, operated by South32, which remains one of the world’s top silver-producing mines. With ongoing exploration and investment, Australia continues to maintain a stable position in global silver production.

Bolivia remains a key player in the silver market, producing 1,200 metric tons in 2023. The country has a rich silver mining history, dating back to colonial times, with the famous Cerro Rico de Potosí mountain once being one of the most productive silver deposits in the world. Today, Bolivia’s modern silver mining industry includes operations such as San Cristóbal, one of the largest silver-zinc-lead mines in the world, operated by Sumitomo Corporation.
8. Russia
Russia produced 1,200 metric tons of silver in 2023, tying with Australia and Bolivia in silver output. The country’s silver production primarily comes from its polymetallic mining operations, where silver is extracted alongside lead, zinc, and gold. Russia’s largest silver producer, Polymetal International, operates several high-grade silver mines, including the Dukat mine, which is one of the biggest silver-producing assets in the country.

10. Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan rounds out the top 10 silver-producing countries, with a production of 990 metric tons in 2023. The country’s silver output is largely derived from its lead and zinc mining operations, with major players like Kazzinc playing a significant role. With abundant natural resources and ongoing investment in mining infrastructure, Kazakhstan has the potential to expand its silver production in the coming years.
Global Silver Production Trends Despite a slight decrease in global silver production in 2023, with total output reaching approximately 830.5 million ounces (25,790 metric tons), silver remains an essential commodity.
The temporary suspension of Newmont’s Peñasquito mine in Mexico due to labor disputes significantly impacted global silver supply. However, increasing demand for silver in renewable energy applications, particularly in solar panels, continues to drive investment in silver mining operations worldwide.
